Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS)
The Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) features dual-stage supplemental front air bags that incorporate seat belt sensors and a front passenger occupant-classification sensor.* Air bag deployment adjusts according to seat-belt usage and crash severity.

Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor
Xterra's advanced safety technology includes available roof-mounted curtain supplemental air bags for side impact and rollover protection, along with a rollover sensor system. When the sensor detects an impending rollover, the system deploys the roof-mounted curtain supplemental air bags. These air bags remain inflated long enough to help provide enhanced protection in the event of multiple rolls.

Side Seat Air Bags
Xterra offers available driver and front-passenger seat side-impact supplemental air bags. They are built into the front seats, not the door, so they're still in the right place if you change your seat position.

Zone Body Construction
High-strength steel and crossmembers are added to Xterra's solid construction to reinforce the cabin. Crumple zones are strategically placed front and rear to help absorb crash energy. Hood buckling creases help to prevent the hood from intruding in the cabin. And to help reduce injury in side impacts, pipe-style steel side-door guard beams in each of Xterra's doors.

Side-impact Door Beams
High-strength side-impact door beams are strategically placed to help protect occupants in the event of certain side impacts.

Active Front Head Restraints
Active front head restraints actually move up and forward in the event of a rear-end collision, helping reduce whiplash-type injuries to you and your front passenger.

3-point Seat Belts
Never forget, seat belts are still your primary restraint in any vehicle, no matter how many air bags there are. That's why Xterra features 3-point Seat Belts for every seating position, including the center rear. Both front seats are also equipped with pretensioners that automatically help tighten the belts when the front air bags deploy, as well as load limiters that give a little when too much force is put on the belt.

5-star Side-impact Safety Rating
The Xterra received NHTSA's highest rating for side-impact (front and rear seat) crash-test safety*-evidence that Nissan is committed to helping protect you and your family.

Occupant-classification Sensor
If the front passenger seat is occupied by a small adult, child, or child restraint, a sensor deactivates that air bag and illuminates the warning light on the dash. If the front passenger seat is unoccupied, the sensor deactivates that air bag, but the lamp will not illuminate.

LATCH System
Xterra is equipped with the LATCH System (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren). This system lets you secure LATCH-compatible child restraints in the second or third row without having to use seat belts or a locking clip.
Snug Kids
A properly installed child restraint is one of the best ways to keep a child safe in a moving vehicle. This fact motivated us to create an industry first: The Snug Kids Child Safety Seat Fit Guide. A guide that lists child seats that fit the rear seats of Nissan vehicles, as well as offers invaluable tips on correct installation.
.

Child-safety Locks
Xterra has child-safety locks to help keep children safe and secure.
Vehicle Security System
Consider the available Vehicle Security System a watchful eye while you're away. This system flashes the headlights and sounds the horn if there is any attempt to open the doors or hood without a key.

Vehicle Immobilizer
The available Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System makes it more difficult for anyone to steal your Xterra without your actual key. A microchip inside the key sends a signal telling the engine to start. Without the key, the chip, and the signal, your Xterra won't start.
