261-hp, 4.0-L V6 Engine

Begging for fast lanes and rugged off-roads, this DOHC 24-valve V6 is a powerhouse. 281 lb-ft of torque, a lightweight aluminum block, an advanced variable-intake manifold, and friction-reducing technology all make Xterra ready for anything.

6-speed Manual Transmission

If you want torquey starts, plus cruising-speed efficiency, the close-ratio manual is the ticket. It's geared to exploit every ounce of horsepower and torque. Triple-cone synchros in second gear help make shifting from first or third into second nice and smooth.

5-speed Automatic Transmission

Xterra's 5-speed automatic transmission is ideally geared for the 265-hp V6, offering a high-performance control system adopted to achieve excellent acceleration, performance, fuel efficiency, and shift quality. Its advanced, lightweight design is geared to make the most out of the VQ engine.

Vehicle Dynamic Control

If your Xterra begins to oversteer (fishtail) or understeer (plow forward), this standard system can reduce engine output and/or apply appropriate brake pressure to specific wheels, to help you stay on your steered path.

Braking Technologies

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) rapidly pumps the brakes during hard braking to help keep your wheels from locking up - a great help when you need to maintain steering control to get around an obstacle safely. 4WD models also feature a G-sensor that reads the terrain, so the ABS can adjust to the road, dirt, gravel, or snow conditions. And Electronic Brake force Distribution senses additional weight in the rear and sends extra force to the rear brakes.

Hill Start Assist

When you find yourself stopped on an incline, the available Hill Start Assist helps keep you from rolling backward at start-up. It applies the brakes for a few seconds, giving you just enough time to move your foot from the brake to the accelerator.

Hill Descent Control

In extreme off-road downhill situations, this available system automatically adjusts throttle and brake pressure with the flip of a switch to help provide a more controlled descent, so you can focus on steering.

Electronic Locking Rear Differential

Xterra's available electronic locking rear differential can help you conquer the toughest terrain, especially when you're stuck in muddy or rocky conditions. Just flip the switch and equal power goes to both rear wheels to boost traction and keep you moving forward.

Switch-activated 4WD System

Xterra's very capable 4WD system features a shift-on-the-fly 4-Wheel Drive, which lets you shift between 2WD and 4WD at the switch of a dial. This system also features a 4-LO with reduced throttle sensitivity for severe off-road conditions.

4-wheel Limited Slip (ABLS)

In most situations, a spinning wheel is a bad thing. Which is why Xterra 4x4s offer 4-wheel Limited Slip (ABLS). The system senses a drive wheel(s) spinning, then automatically applies the brakes to the slipping wheel(s) and directs power to the wheels with the best traction. (4x2 models are available with 2-wheel Limited Slip.
